Shé:kon,
My name is Lexis Jacobs, Mohawk of Akwesasne. I graduated from the University of Ottawa with a degree in Psychology, but my passion for art has always been with me.
In high school, I was part of AP Art and received four art awards for juried shows. Some of which are used today as examples in high school art classes. I continued to grow my skills at university, taking college-level visual arts classes, including courses with live models that challenged me to sketch and paint from life. While I’ve had years of training, creating has always come naturally to me.
As a kid, I loved entering holiday coloring contests at a local gas station—and I won year after year, taking home prizes like Wiis and Nintendos (what a time🥺). That came full circle this year when I published my first hand-drawn coloring book, inspired by Haudenosaunee traditions and fun. What began as a fun project for myself and little cousins to enjoy coloring became something much bigger—an opportunity to share my culture and creativity and deserved to be celebrated in all communities.
Recently, my piece The Flame She Carries was awarded 2nd place at the Akwesasne Art Market and Juried Show. Alongside this, I’ve worked with local Akwesasne businesses to design logos, branding and murals. I collaborate with The DEV Centre Hotel in Cornwall, Ontario, creating culturally inspired paintings to display throughout their hotels and facilities, helping to share Indigenous culture with visitors. I also take on commissioned work, from custom charcoal portraits to acrylic paintings, while always creating new pieces whenever inspiration strikes.
Looking ahead, I plan to attend more art markets and powwows—(see you at the 2025 Akwesasne Powwow 😉). I’m still new to running an art business and promoting myself, but I’m learning every day and truly grateful for the support from customers, friends, and family 🫶🏽.
Enjoy!
